The History of The Rib Rack

In the early 1990’s, Mark and Mike achieved local fame for their barbecues on the front porch of their Central Michigan University fraternity house. Their journey began when owners Mike Owens and Mark Tomas lived with their brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Tomas earned a degree in finance and Owens earned a degree in broadcast and advertising. After college they each had successful careers and decided to open their first restaurant in Waterford, MI in May of 2004 with plans to open more Rib Rack restaurants throughout the metro area.


Owens gained his experience while working in other restaurants prior to opening the Rib Rack and continued to develop and improve the recipes for the ribs and sauce through trial and error.

They think you’ll agree, the ribs that had their beginning on the front porch of 906 South Main Street along with their premium sauce will be enjoyed by you and your families!
